Feel

Hidden in the hills. Guarded by history.

Sociedade Rural is a gateway to the untamed beauty of a lesser-known Alentejo: the Alto Alentejo.
Here are our suggestions to help you plan your visit: explore the richness of the estate and its surroundings through outdoor activities that reveal the soul of the landscape. From the imposing rocky massifs to the vibrant wildlife, from hidden waterfalls to rivers winding through the region, nature is always within reach, ready to be discovered. On foot, on horseback or by bike, every trail offers a different way of connecting with the land.

The Farm

At Azeitona Verde, Sociedade Rural’s working estate, we care for the land as a living organism, preserving its health and natural balance. Instead of imposing monocultures, we cultivate within an integrated ecosystem, where spontaneous vegetation is our ally, helping to retain moisture and fertility.

Across 30 hectares of certified organic land, we protect centuries-old cork oaks and olive trees, while planting over a thousand native trees and shrubs, promoting biodiversity and capturing carbon. From this land and these trees comes our organic olive oil, Azeitona Verde, a true expression of place, created with respect for nature and time.

Here, gardening follows a natural, untamed rhythm, in harmony with the cycles of the landscape and the resilience of native ecosystems. Rather than shaping nature, we allow nature to shape us, creating not a conventional garden, but a living extension of the landscape itself.

Marvão

Perched on the top of a hillside, Marvão seems to float between sky and earth.

Founded in the 9th century, the village still preserves its medieval walls, guarding narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and sunlit squares that invite you to walk slowly and lose yourself in time.

From the castle, the landscape of Alto Alentejo unfolds into infinite horizons, where the green of the mountains blends with the gold of the fields.

In Marvão, every stone, every view, every silence tells a story – a place that awakens contemplation and full presence.

Serra de São Mamede

Hiking trails, rare bird species, wildflowers, cork forests.
An untouched landscape where nature writes the rules.

Megalithic Heritage

In Alto Alentejo, ancient stones – dolmens, menhirs and megalithic monuments, tell stories of millennia.

Silent and imposing, they invite you to feel the connection to the past, to nature, and to the mystery of this ancient land.

Here, history is not written in books, it is alive in the landscape, waiting to be felt.

The Region

Make the most of your stay to discover the magic of Alto Alentejo, a land of wide horizons, castles, enchanting villages and cities full of history.

Each place holds its own charm:

  • Alter do Chão, where time slows down among medieval streets and Portugal’s equestrian tradition comes to life.
  • Castelo de Vide, a medieval village with cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses and a castle offering captivating views over the surrounding hills and nearby plains.
  • Crato, former seat of the Order of Malta, with its imposing monastery and heritage marked by spirituality.
  • Elvas, a World Heritage Site, with its unique fortifications and streets filled with colour and memory.
Among city walls, sunlit squares and endless landscapes, the region invites you to lose yourself slowly, always at the calm rhythm of the Alentejo.

Don’t miss:

  • Estremoz, known as the “white city” for its marble façades and the castle that dominates the landscape.
  • Vila Viçosa, known as the “Princess of the Alentejo”, a village marked by the beauty of its white marble, found in palaces, churches and streets. Once the residence of the House of Braganza, it combines remarkable historical heritage with Alentejo tranquillity, quiet squares and traditional cafés.

Among city walls, sunlit squares and endless landscapes, the region invites you to wander slowly, always to the tranquil rhythm of the Alentejo.

Local Culture

Traditional markets, small festivals, artisanal cheese, wool, and pottery. The real Alentejo is warm, proud, and wonderfully unpolished.

Festivals

In July, Marvão comes alive with the magic of classical music at the Marvão International Music Festival, created by conductor Christoph Poppen and soprano Juliane Banse. This event has become one of Portugal’s most prestigious classical music festivals, uniting internationally renowned artists with promising young talents.

In September, it’s time for cinema with the the International Film Festival of Marvão and Valença de Alcântara. This collaborative production brings outdoor cinema to villages and historic sites along the Portuguese-Spanish border.
